DURBAN GARDENER ACHIEVES ASTONISHING PLACE IN LONDON MARATHON
03 May 2019
A Durban gardener who dreamt of competing in an international marathon, has delivered an astonishing performance at the recent Virgin Money London Marathon, finishing within the first 600 participants in a field of over 40 000 runners.
On top of this the 52-year-old Michael Ndlovu placed 14thin his 50-54 year old age category, crossing the finish line in a speedy 2:42. His overall position of 570 places him in the top 100 overall in a field packed with some of the best elite and recreational runners from all over the world.
Michael’s lifelong ambition to run an international marathon was made possible by his employers Urban Lime Properties, specialists in commercial property urban-regeneration. The company employs Michael as a groundsman on their Florida Road properties and teamed up with a UK charity Fields in Trust, dedicated to preserving green areas for public use to secure a much sought after place in the marathon.
An overwhelmed, but jubilant Michael was greeted at the finish line by Urban Lime CEO Jonny Friedman. “My Zulu headband brings me luck when I run. It was a good race, but it was cold. I miss the Durban weather,” said Michael.
“Michael did South Africa and Durban proud today, coming 14thin his age group in the most elite marathon in the world. What a true champion. This entire experience has been quite challenging for him but his humble determination shines through and his result today is a true reflection of his extraordinary character. We are all so proud to be able to make his dream come true,” said Friedman.
Michael landed back in South African on Wednesday and went straight back into his training program for this year’s Comrades Marathon. “No rest, I start training for the Comrades Marathon now,” said Michael, who has competed in the gruelling 89km Comrades Marathon for the last 20 years. In 2017 he placed top in his age category (50-55) with a personal best time of 6:49.
