COMRADES TOYOTA WIN-A-CAR HANDOVER

03 July 2019

“I am overjoyed and so grateful; this new Toyota Corolla Quest came at a time when I really needed a new car after experiencing problems with my current vehicle.”

64-year old Mohammed Akoojee says the reality of winning such a substantial prize just three weeks ago is still sinking in, after he was declared the winner of the Comrades Toyota Win-A-Car competition; and received the keys to his prized Toyota Corolla Quest in Johannesburg today (Wednesday, 3 July 2019)

The winner of the Comrades Toyota Win-A-Car competition was drawn on Comrades race day during the 13-hour live televised broadcast from a pool of 14,708 entries, purchased through charity raffle tickets and via the Comrades App. A total of R147,080 was raised for the six official Comrades Amabeadibeadi charities through this initiative, courtesy of Toyota South Africa.

Akoojee, who is semi-retired says, “I have been entering the Toyota Win-A-Car lucky draw via SMS for the past few years but this year, I decided to download the Comrades App and enter. Little did I know that one entry into the competition would score me a brand new and absolutely stunning Toyota Corolla Quest.”

“The App is great; I have a cousin and a friend who have been running the Comrades so I normally would be tracking their progress. It is tradition for us to watch the Comrades on television so when I heard my name being announced, it was a bit surreal.”

Akoojee has two children, Yusuf and Mahdiya, who are elated with their Dad’s winning. He says, “They are just so excited and were obviously quite surprised to hear that I had won a brand-new car through Comrades. They think that their Daddy is quite fortunate and should enter more competitions.”

Akoojee says, “It’s all thanks to the Comrades Marathon, Toyota and everyone who has been supportive. I am grateful to all of you, especially my family and friends who have been there for me. This is only the second new car that I will own in my life. My first was also a Toyota which I drove for 27 years until it was stolen. God works miracles.”

Toyota Senior Manager of Promotions and Sponsorship, Reche van Niekerk says, ‘As always, Toyota is incredibly proud to be involved in not only the Comrades Marathon but also its Amabeadibeadi Charity Drive as community support has always been a key value for our company.’

CMA Chairperson, Cheryl Winn says, ‘CMA is incredibly proud of its association with Toyota, which is the only car manufacturer based in KwaZulu-Natal.  The Toyota Win-A-Car Competition is one of the most important drivers of the Comrades Marathon Official Charity drive and has contributed hundreds of thousands of rand to our Official Charities.  For this we are deeply appreciative to Toyota’.

Winn adds, ‘Every runner and supporter who entered the Win-A-Car competition has contributed to our charitable endeavours. Every raffle ticket sold has helped in making the work of our six Amabeadibeadi Official Charities that much more achievable and successful. We are grateful to you.’
