The traditional Comrades Marathon may have been cancelled but the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) is ensuring that its recently launched ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ virtual race gets its fair coverage to an international online audience tomorrow, Sunday, 14 June 2020.
With nearly 40,000 entrants from 86 nations participating in what is being dubbed, The Ultimate Virtual Race, the CMA is pulling out all the stops to showcase the true spirit of the Comrades Marathon, uniting participants across the globe in one fabulous virtual event and enhancing the Comrades experience via an online broadcast.
The inaugural virtual race, ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ will be aired on the Comrades Marathon’s official YouTube channel - - and Facebook page – - from 16:00 to 18:00 Central Africa Time or South Africa Standard Time tomorrow.
Far from the traditional 13-hour television broadcast which the race has enjoyed over the past three decades through the national broadcaster, SABC, this year’s virtual race broadcast will be two hours long but will make for an exciting, informative and entertaining take on The Ultimate Human Race over its nearly 100 years of ultrarunning.
The show will feature discussions on the virtual race, ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ and include reflections on the Comrades Marathon’s enduring footprint on South African society and the world’s running community over the years.
Featured guests will include Athletics South Africa President, Aleck Skhosana, CMA Chairperson, Cheryl Winn, CMA Medical Convenor, Dr Jeremy Boulter, Women’s Down Run Best Time Holder, Frith Van Der Merwe and South African road running legend, Blanche Moila, amongst others.
In addition to the official afternoon broadcast, the ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ will be covered on social media during the day in the form of informal, fun interviews with participants, streamed live as Zoom chats through the official Comrades Marathon Facebook page.
CMA General Manager, Keletso Totlhanyo says, “We are pleased to be hosting our very first virtual race, ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ and securing a broadcast in line with this exciting innovation. With our footprint of attracting entrants from 86 countries, this online broadcast will be able to reach participants around the world, making this a truly international experience. It is our intention that this event is an all-inclusive one, which runners, their friends and families can all be a part of.”
